Description: Bloomfield Savage Post 970 was named in honor of Murray Savage of Bristol, New York, who gave his life on October 8, 1918 in France. Murray Savage served in the All-American Division of the U.S. Army and was a good buddy of Sergeant Alvin York, the highest decorated soldier of World War I.
Bloomfield Savage Post 970 was chartered in 1923 by the Department of New York American Legion. Its present headquarters, on Rt. 5&20 was built mostly by members’ devoted labor and was dedicated on October 12, 1974. However, due to low active membership and costs, in 2006 the members of Bloomfield Savage Post 970 turned over the ownership of the Legion Post and 18 acres of land to the Town of East Bloomfield for a small fee. This will keep the building and lands in a community wide use as it was met to be. Legionnaires will continue to use the building for their meetings and fund raising events. The American Legion is continually looking for new members. Anyone that has been in the military service should contact Robert Spike, 585-657-7467, to see if you are eligible to belong to this organization that sponsors many activities in the community, such as the commemorative service held each Memorial Day in Elton Park
